Germany is cutting defense spending and force levels. It has cut the number of new Tiger attack helicopters it will buy. Only 80 will be bought, saving over $700 million. Nearly two billion dollars will be saved by taking up to 90 Tornado warplanes out of service by 2005. Ten torpedo boats will also be decommissioned by 2005. The nearly three billion dollars in savings will be used to buy new Infantry Fighting Vehicles, mobile anti-aircraft missiles and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft.
