A spokesman for Algeria's influential military said that they will not intervene in the April 8 presidential election and have no preferred candidate. Army-backed authorities had cancelled legislative elections that a hard line Islamic party was poised to win in 1992. This set off fighting that has left over 150,000 people dead, largely at the hands of rebels. - Adam Geibel
