Taiwan is suing a former Taiwanese army officer who defected to China 23 years ago and has since risen to become the chief economic advisor to the Chinese premier. The defector, Lin Yifu, demanding a million dollars, to cover the relief money given to his family, plus interest. Taiwan initially listed Lin as missing, as he disappeared while a company commander on a heavily fortified island off the China coast. Taiwan knew that Lin had defected, but thought it better to avoid embarrassment and  list him as missing. Many educated Taiwanese agree that China and Taiwan should be part of one country, even though they benefit from the greater freedom and economic opportunity on Taiwan.
