Iraq: June 19, 2001

Archives

Fearing that Iraq has hidden many anti-aircraft guns and missile launchers amongst civilian housing, American and British warplanes have cut back on their retaliatory bombings. So far this year, Iraqi anti-aircraft positions have been attacked only seven times, compared to 47 for the same period last year. So far this year, Iraqi anti-aircraft guns and missiles have been fired on coalition aircraft 48 times. It is also thought that Iraqi anti-aircraft weapons have been built up with Chinese and Yugoslav help. Iraq would very much like to shoot down a Coalition aircraft. Failing that, Iraq would like coalition warplanes to bomb civilian areas and cause civilian casualties. Iraq is playing a propaganda game and downed coalition aircraft and bombed Iraqi civilians are the preferred ammunition.
