Israel: Palestinian Civil War Escalates

February2, 2007: The fighting in Gaza is getting more intense, as both Hamas and Fatah send thousands of their gunmen out to seize areas belonging to the other. There have been more than a hundred casualties a day, plus much property damage.

In Lebanon, Israeli recon aircraft continue to make several flights daily. The UN peacekeepers continue to protest, and that's that. A week of violence in Beirut, mainly between Shia and Sunni gangs, as killed or wounded over a hundred. The Arab League is sending negotiators to try and arrange a truce. Hizbollah continues to pressure the government with street demonstrations, but has held back on turning it into a civil war, so far.

February 1, 2007: The three day old ceasefire between Fatah and Hamas appears to be over. Fatah security forces raided the Islamic University in Gaza, and arrested eight Iranians. One of the Iranians committed suicide. The others were accused to providing technical assistance to Hamas terrorist groups. Meanwhile, Hamas gunmen ambushed a Fatah convoy, and seized a weapons and ammo shipment. Nearly a hundred were killed or wounded as Fatah and Hamas resumed fighting for control of Gaza.

January 31, 2007:Hamas and Fatah freed 38 of their 40 hostages. But gunmen from both sides have resumed shooting each other.

January 30, 2007:A Saudi brokered ceasefire is holding in Gaza, but no one expects it to hold for long. In a week of violence in the Palestinian Territories, 34 were killed, some 150 wounded and 40 kidnapped.

January 29, 2007: A suicide bomber killed himself and two civilians in a bakery at the Israeli resort town of Eilat. The Israeli government did not launch the usual retaliatory attacks, even though two Palestinian terrorist groups took credit for the attack. This was Palestinian suicide attack inside Israel in nine months. The Israelis are intent on finding out how the terrorist, and his explosives, got into Israel.
