North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il has promoted 54 generals, and retired nearly as many. This put more of Kim's allies into key positions and reduced the possibility that the army might resist any of Kim's economic reforms. Kim's father had better control of the military because he had a large role in establishing the North Korean army. Kim the younger was not seen in quite the same light.
