 National elections for village and district officials generated the usual violence that, this time, left 73 dead and hundreds wounded. Many local political organizations use thugs to scare opposition voters away on election day. The country still has major problems with corruption, especially at the local level. This is scaring away foreign investment and has become a major issue in the media.
