The government estimates that the country has three million drug addicts, with heroin being the most common drug. Large quantities of heroin make their way to Russia from Afghanistan and other Central Asian nations. Criminal gangs, often composed of Chechens and Central Asians, run this business with ruthless, and bloody, efficiency.
