The government is now turning it's attention to the uncharacteristically high murder rate, which is about 7 per 100,000 population. That's high for Sri Lanka, but about the same as the current rate in New York City, which is enjoying its lowest murder rate in four decades. Sir Lanka is full of Buddhists, New York is full of New Yorkers. Sri Lanka attributes the unusually high murder rate (twice the historical one), on the two decades of civil war, and the influx of over a hundred thousand illegal firearms. The rate is down in New York because of better police
