The Department of Defense is planning to mobilize about a quarter million reservists if Iraq is invaded. Most of these troops will be used to beef up security in the United States, not support military operations in the Persian Gulf. About the same number of troops were mobilized for the 1990-1 Gulf War, but a 2002-3 attack on Iraq is expected to use a lot fewer troops for the actual fighting.
