Counter-Terrorism: A Chat Room You Can't Leave

Archives

January 27, 2009: Two cousins from Chicago, Zubair and Khaleel Ahmed recently pled guilty to conspiring, between 2004-7, to " provide material support and resources, including the defendants themselves as personnel, to terrorists in violation of Title 18, U.S.C. Section 2339A."

The two were recruited by three other men in Ohio, who were convicted, last year, on terrorism charges, and sentenced to life in prison. These three were part of a large organization, that had operations in Canada and Europe.

The Ahmed cousins face 15 years in prison. Zubair was born in the United States, while Khaleel was born in India, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. The two men learned how to use military weapons, and planned to eventually attack American troops. This sort of enthusiasm for learning how to use weapons, and prepare for terrorist attacks, has been popular with a few young men in India (which has nearly 200 million Moslems), North America (a few million Moslems) and Europe (over 20 million Moslems). A much higher proportion of Moslems in this area have access to the Internet (nearly half, versus less than five percent in majority Moslem nations), and that's where a lot of cheerleading for, and discussion of, Islamic terrorism takes place. Sometimes it goes beyond talk, and that often leads to a jail cell.
