The South African National Defense Force has decided that all commands, records, operational orders, and training will be in the English language. Other official languages will be used during Basic Training only while teaching the troops English. The previous white government used both English and Afrikaans. The South African Air Force is so short of money that the 28th Squadron (which operates the 12 C130 transports) will be limited to 800 flying hours per year. These hours will be used only for emergencies. Any government department which wants to be supported by these air transports will have to pay the cost of the flying hours. The South African Air Force has grounded its five Boeing-707 aircraft (some are tankers, the others are electronic warfare platforms) due to an intermittent electrical problem which they cannot fix. --Stephen V Cole
