A Iraqi anti-aircraft missile that fell back to earth (as many do) and hit a crowded sports stadium, killed 23 and injured eleven. Iraq promptly blamed ux warplanes for bombing the stadium. A press conference featured ten year old fragments from American bombs. Pentagon officials pointed out that American and British warplanes had dropped no bombs on the day indicated. Lying about that would not work, there being so many people involved and a Western press eager to get a scandalous scoop. But the Iraqi ploy is mainly for local, and Middle Eastern, audiences.
