The Special Corruption Investigation Unit of the South African government has asked for special authority from the President to investigate questions regarding the way contracts were awarded for the recent series of arms purchases. The military charges that there was no corruption and that the investigation is simply a political witch hunt because suppliers favored by certain political factions, or equipment that would cost less to buy but more to operate, was chosen.--Stephen V Cole
