Some 700 members of the banned Falugong movement demonstrated in the capital. Police arrested them. The government has been unsuccessful in suppressing the movement, even though local officials have become more brutal with Falungong adherents. The movement claims 70 million members in China, the government says there are only two million. In the eastern province of Shandong, local government officials were dismissed from their jobs for using force to suppress a demonstration by local Moslems. Police killed six people, and injured 32 others,  when they fired into a crowd of two thousand on December 12th.. The Moslems were feuding with Han Chinese who had emigrated from other parts of China.
