Violence continues to rise. In addition to spectacular gun battles between dozens of heavily armed militiamen, there is daily violence between individuals and smaller groups of men. About a third of the total injuries are from knife wounds, which rarely get reported. In many parts of the country, the casualty rate is higher than in the most deadly parts of central Iraq. But there are far fewer journalists in Somalia, because the country is seen as more dangerous than central Iraq.
