A volume in a continuing Johns Hopkins series on the Second War with Britain, The War of 1812 in the Chesapeake is essentially an historical dictionary of conflict as it affected the Chesapeake Bay area. 

The book is divided into five chapters. The first gives a brief general over-view of the war, while the second provides a more detailed look at events in the Chesapeake region, using a question-and-answer format (e.g., "What were the principal campaigns?", etc.). There follow chapters covering, in alphabetical format places that were of some important during the war in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.  Although the entries are place-oriented, there is a wealth of detail on people and events. The volume also includes a valuable series of appendices, with a fairly detailed chronology.
