Dealing With Dirty Water On The Run
Next Article → PHILIPPINES: Rebels Trash Ramadan Truce

September 29, 2007: Air Forces are being offered a nifty new device to insure that, when pilots are forced to bail out, they don’t have to worry about getting sick from drinking any of the water they might come across in a remote area. The solution is a four ounce bag, containing the latest in water filtration technology. This device is capable of filtering just about any crud out of about a barrel (44 gallons) of water. Just put some of the local water in one end of the bag, and drinkable water comes out the other end. Such devices have been sold to civilian outdoors enthusiasts for some time, and cost $200 or so. Very portable filtration systems are, however, a rather recent development. Britains Royal Air Force is buying 600 of these H2O-TO-GO devices, that will be stored under the ejection seat that takes the pilot out of his disabled aircraft, and safely to the
ground.

The water filters that most hikers, etc. use don't work like that.  And almost all cost less than $100 retail.
