The Drill SGT SF versus SOF? 5/10/2012 6:58:04 AM
Does the author understand the difference?

Army Special Forces (e.g. Green Berets) are Special Operations Forces (as are SEALS, Delta, Rangers, Air Commando's and some USMC Recon types)

All Special Operations Forces (SOF) are not Special Forces (SF)

PS: But most often the rangers operate on their own carrying out particularly difficult missions, and often work with non-SOCOM infantry. All this is somewhat the opposite of what Special Forces were invented for.

carrying out difficult, at all costs, missions is exactly what Rangers were invented for. And of course, Rangers are NOT Special Forces.

Pont du Hoc force example.

Watch the footage from Saving Private Ryan and see the reserve Ranger Battalion go right in onto Omaha alongside the 29th NG Div. That is pretty much, "working with non-SOCOM infantry"

Minor correction: it's Pointe du Hoc, not Pont du Hoc (pont means bridge in French and pointe is point which is more appropriate for that particular location)

The shell holes from the USS Texas are still deep. Like the surface of the Moon
