Subject: how realistic is MOUT training
terrain21u    9/16/2004 8:45:18 PM
I'm not sure if this kind of topic has come up before. If it has, my apologise. Just point me to the right discussion.

Anyway, I was looking at some pictures from some MOUT training sites and one thing stood out to me. There was no furniture in them. I know their purpose is to teach basic techniques but in real life people have things in their home that can contribute to making it hard to move around. There are coffee tables to trip over and couches in the way. People put things under windows and if you use some of the entering through windows techniques you crash down on top of them. I admit that I did not see the insides of the training buildings at JRTC or Camp Lejeune, so if it is different there, I'd be interested to know.

Also of interest, I read an article where some soldiers talked about what they encountered in training and what they encountered in Iraq. They commented that room and building layouts were different; and that while in traing you encountered very few civilians, in real life though, they deal with them all the time.

Any thought on any of this?

Well in asia they don't have much furniture in their houses. everyone sits, eats, and sleeps on the floor.

We train in buildings with furniture. We train with civilians on the battlefield. Complaints come from part timers I imagine...

hey sentinel so the military is fighting 2 wars ago? Vietnam in Asia with nothing in the houses lol. yah the top dogs wrecked Iraq just like LBJ and Westmorland did Vietnam. Im just being a msart ass with those statements, but I have asked the same question myself about nothing being in the rooms, they also oughta spread out more until they get right up at the door, window or whatever the hell they are gonna enter through because they might boobi trap it

Very broad generalization of Asian countries. Run through a house in the ROK, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan or Hong Kong and you'll be tripping over plenty. Don't know about China or SE Asia but I imagine that many would be the same. rikopotomous...read the post right before yours. I'm no grunt, so I'll listen to somebody who's actually done MOUT training.

Ever been to a MOUT city rik? Guys that know what they're doing do spread out before they get to a door. They move, quickly, in wedges or diamonds...stacking on the door on the move. Closed entrances get checked for traps before it's kicked/shotgunned/detonated. Open doors get entered without stopping. After watching the Marines in Fallujah..I'm thinking a trip to range 74 here on Bragg with some of us would be a good thing ;) And yes...it has furniture in several buildings (including a scary little hospital ;))
