how come it take the Brits 32 weeks to turn out a marine whereas it only takes the usmc only 16 - surely it can't take that long to convert a british civilian into a decent soldier

Typical American arrogance. They train for longer to be better trained soldiers.

"They train longer" is a fallacy, its explained in the post before yours.
The USMC breaks it training up into Blocks unlike the RM who's Infantryman go thru Blocks I-III in Basic. The USMCs Infantryman, who go thru a 13wk Basic (Block I), 11wk Small Unit Tactics (BlockII) at SOI, but Block III which is mission enabling training like Assault Climbing or Handling Small Boats (which the RM do in Basic) the USMC saves for the Unit PTP (Pre-deployment Training Program).
The reason for this is, unlike the RM Basic graduate who will go to 1 of 3 mirrored BNs the new USMC grunt will be headed to units w/vastly different assignments. If they go to III MEF, they'll be heavily Amphibious focused so they be working w/Zodiacs & such. But that would be a waste of training time the those headed to the Mojave Des. units of 29Palms or the scouts in LAR or the grunts attached to the Tank & LAAD BNs or the Marines of the MEU who's Coys each have specific Missions to train for.
Its not
Time
or
Cost
effective for US Marines to do training Blocks I-III in basic like the RM.
BUT ANSWER this question smart guy..
When the USMC returned to A'stan in '08 1200 US Marines of the 24th MEUs BLT went on a tear Taliban Strongholds like Garmsir & Jugroom in 2mths that the Brits never took in 3yrs. The Brit Cmdr in Helmand had to reign the Marines in b/c he didn't have the manpower the hold all the areas the Marines had seized. The Brit newspapers were even asking why such a small # of US Marines could be that successful.
Fast Fwd to the fall of 2010 a 1600 RM Task Force taking heavy casualties & making no progress over a 4yr period hand over the Sangin district to a 1200 USMC TF led by 3/5. Although also taking heavy casualties w/in 6mths the aggressive,
INTENSE
(fr/the above post) nature of USMC tactics had pushed the taliban out of the district proper & into the outskirts. Also forcing a change in Taliban tactics of openly engaging the RM causing mostly Small Arms Fire RM casualties, to abandoning those open tactics against the USMC force instead to rely on IEDs.
....WHY is that??
The Battle Ground is the Real Proving Ground and theirs been NO Unit over the past 100yrs has been as successful across as many different battlefields, terrain, or enemy as the US Marine Corps. None as Versatile or Flexible and as Innovative in the present.
When the Brits were getting their asses handed to them in Basra the USMC was flipping Tribes in Al Anbar & the same is happening in today Helmand.
Do the research.

what the hell.do u guys think your saying. The usmccould totally crush the gay ass british fag rmc. You cnat even compare the force recon groups too rmc. The reason why the rmc trains longer is because the typical fatass british countryman is a fucking shithead and has no comparison tioo the level of fitness of americans. Rmc could get the fuck beat out if them by a anyone vecause they are a bunch of pussies. Semper fidelis motherfuckah
