Subject: Current status on hero marine?
ZackG    3/25/2006 1:53:51 PM
I rememeber hearing of a marine who, while clearing a house in iraq, took 7? bullets and still managed to fight with his sidearm, and sheilded another marine from shrapnell. I thought I heard he recieved the navy cross and was up for the MOH. Anyone know if he got it? Anyone know if he's fully recovered from the injuries/what he's doing today? I've tried researching on my own but i can't seem to remember his name or find anything on google.

No not off the top of my head. You really need a name to effectively search for this.

ok so i found out who it was... Sgt. Brad Kasal... here's the link on his story - link also, i found this: I thought I'd give you a brief update on 1st Sgt Brad Kasal. Last week he went back to Bethesda hoping to have bone graft surgery, however his leg had not been "stretched" back to it's original length yet, so he came home to Oceanside, CA, where the "stretching" continues. He has this incredible quadruple halo device on his right leg, which has adjusting bolts that acutally stretch his leg. His leg bones are growing back on their own (I know that is not proper terminology, but it fits) and he may not "need" a bone graft, but wants one if it will cut a month or so off his recuperation time. You see, Brad wants to be able to pass the PFT (physical fitness test) so he can make Sgt Major in the fall. He is such an inspiring individual. There's obviously nothing I can add to this. Semper Fi. ...so i found the answer to my own question...but i figured i'd put it out there to anyone who's interested.

The recovery/healing part is becoming common. The things the surgeons & therapists are doing are amazing. The post trama stress treatments are (at least in the short run) working better than one would think. A few months ago NPR did a series of storys/interviews on recovering wounded soldiers. One segement focsed on women who had severe injuries to their faces. They were in various stages of cosmetic restorative sugery. The sangfroid of the soldiers in the interviews really caught my attention. Really hope the psychiatric side holds as well as the surgical side for these wounded.

That was a great story. I seem to remember that is where we got introduced to Tammy Duckworth.....what hit me the most was how with her prostetic legs she was glad she didn't have to wear panty hose anymore!!! Though scoffed at by most I think NPR has done a very good job of covering thsi angle and a lot more of the human dimension of the war.

for sure... i was driving to school one day and it occured to me...i was curious to find out how he's doing now. Funny thing is, i talked to my recruiter this week... at the time, Brad Kasal was my recruiter's first seargeant... and my recruiter was a few buildings away when brad got wounded. my recruiter said he talked to brad on the phone not too long ago, he's doing some sort of instructing for recon marines in coronado. he's now a sgt major, and he's still pending on the MOH...it can take up to a few years supposedly... he's still not recovered 100%. so, i guess that's the most recent update.
