On 20 May 3d Battalion, 9th Marines was officially reactivated at Camp Lejeune. The battalion had been reactivated in order to support the ongoing war on terror.

Prior to the unit?s deactivation in 1994, 3/9?s battle history had included fighting on Iwo Jima in 1945 and being the first battalion-sized organization to land in Vietnam in 1965. The battalion?s last operation was in Somalia during Operation RESTORE HOPE in 1992.

are they ever going to make 4th marines a permanent regiment with its own battalion and get rid of the UDP. it would make sense . especially now that they are relocating a lot of them to Guam. i think the UDP  is a waste of time. all they do is take marine from other battalion to fill a different regiment doesn't make sense.
