Subject: .50 MG on Marine copters
Dushan    4/4/2004 1:30:45 AM
Is it me or do US Marine Copters (Ch-53 and CH-46) always carry .50 MG's? Why do they carry those over the M-60? And why are helicopters still with the M-60? It has been described as extremely unreliable, shouldn't it be replaced with the M-204?

marines have just started using FN M3 .50 cals. I do not remember mod number. 1100 rds/min. Do not know about the M60's but have seen M240's.

The M2 has a max eff range of 2000 meters compared to the M60 1100 meters. I think you meant M240, and yes that is used as well with a max eff of 1800 meters. I've never seen an M60 in the hands of any Marine, much less mounted on our helos.

i agree with mike. some probably have m2 .50 cal's and some probably have m240's, or both. i doubt anything still uses the m60. i thought that was retired.
