If we don't stop buying weapons systems, and spend money on new
living quarters our troops will be long gone.

I agree. Some Army installations have quarters so dilapidated and run-down, you'd think it was a slum. And I've been to a few whose idea of improving barracks was to slap aluminum siding on the outside to make them look more presentable to passers-by. I've been in several Bases and Posts who actually put their alloted funds to use and built barracks comparable to college dorms, especially the USAF. And chow is another thing: after eating in an Army chowhall several years ago (which I thought was run very professionally, and there was no complaint from me about the quality of the food), I overheard an AirForce captain outside saying to his group that there was "no way he would subject them to such bad mess facilities." What a prick! But I found out why after visiting a few USAF installations and using their mess facilities (just don't wear anArmy uniform in some of them, you'll get some serious bad looks), and I was amazed that the USAF spends so much money making their dining facilities look like top-notch restaurants. Another gripe I had: I was alloted, as an E-5, a certain amount of "daily meal ration/pay" for when I was travelling from poiunt to point and had to use civilian establishments, and one time when submitting all my travel vouchers at an AirForce destination, they told me they get almost 3 times the allotment for food and quarters that Army does. It's no wonder the services are always at each other's throats about Congressional favoritism... I was even refused treatment by an AirForce hospital once when I was injured in a training environment, and had to use the civilian hospital 10 miles off post "because I was not Air Force personnel." But I made sure that a few state and federal legislators got word of that incident. I'm sure the AF personnel had some explaning to do, as it was discovered I was not the only Army person they did that to. Guess they didn't want to sacrifice any of their precious Air Force budget on treating a lowly Army grunt...
