Subject: The United States of America, the worlds greatest leader
desertdog    8/22/2003 11:57:37 PM
The United States of America is the greatest leader the world has ever seen. We are made up of many races that have fled the tyrants of the home countries. In return the USA and its allies have given the world more than any other government ever has. The USA and its Allies have done more good with the worlds resources than any other nation or government. The USA and its Allies have fought to save the lives and liberty of the worlds people more than any other nation. We have been unselfish. We have sacrificed lives and money. Who else in the world can make such a claim. We give more of our tax money to the peoples of the world then anyone else. We do this with the help of our Allies. That is who the worlds greatest leader is and always be.

The british empire is gone, lost pretty much everything they attained and gave us the middle east problem as it exits today, wasn't it the british that came up with the mandate for israel and palestine? The canadains are no more multicultural that the US, they do have less of most ethnic groups when compared to the US, they also employ less and educate less, thats not a slam just a fact of a smaller population. Takes a great country with great leaders to win the big wars and thats what the US has done.

?The british empire is gone, lost pretty much everything they attained and gave us the middle east problem as it exits today, wasn't it the british that came up with the mandate for israel and palestine?? Well I was castigated by sysops for calling you an ignoramus, so I won?t do that again. But you couldn?t be more wrong. Take a long look at the world around us. The Empire might be gone but over 70 former British colonies still associate as the Commonwealth and in almost all cases their legal and military systems came from Britain. Even the US legal system comes from the British system. How about that for a legacy? The British shaped the world that you live. As to the mandate for Palestine (Israel didn?t exist at the time) this was granted by the League of Nations I believe. Those that are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it. Question to the US posters. Do they actually teach world history in US schools these days? I have read bad reports of the US education system on lots of US sites.

"Question to the US posters. Do they actually teach world history in US schools these days? I have read bad reports of the US education system on lots of US sites." When you sit in a restaurant and you get asked if Adolf Hitler is still Germanys "President" ... that sort of things make you wonder ...

Heorot, From what i've heard, our educational system has been in need of a drastic overhaul for quite some time! Sadly though, history lessons are at the bottom of the heap now a day's, and it just might stay that way for some time! Nasty German Idiot, Hopefully they were just kidding!

"Austriae est imperare orbi universo" That roughly means " it's up to Austria to command the whole universe " This ambitious motto was those of the House of Austria. We know what Austria is today.

No empire will last forever. The US has a lot of CoG´s (Center of Gravities). In the end some other country/countries/alliances will recognize these US shortcomings and device a suitable strategy to seriously challenge the US hegemony of today. And arrogance and overconfidence of the US leadership/people might not give the US long enough time to identify and react to external power challenges. I mean, you're surely not going to militarily pre-emptively strike on EU when Russia joins ;) The rest is just a competition about oil resources and consumer markets. He who has the last oil drop will win.... Just my 2 cents foobar67 PS: Hopefully US leaders will learn that violence is NOT the solution to all problems. Although in some cases nessecary. DS: Forgive my shortcomings in the English language. DS2: Nice to hear that the multicultural US has no problems with racism and ethnical problems. LA Watts is a really nice multicultural and safe melting pot of the US....

Is this in the crime-infested part of "South LA", no longer called "South Central" for some odd reason? I think last year there was a gang-warfare spree and the death toll was setting some sort of old record. Low triple-digits I think. Anyhow: you can call this country a melting pot, but I won't mix into other cities. I don't want the bars on my windows too...

To ignore the lessons of history is dangerous. Especially if you thing that history begins 1776. A lot of lessons learnt has been achieved before that year. So many great leaders, I don't really know. Roosevelt comes to mind, he was the real father of modern US industrialism, with grand developement projects throughout the US. Not to mention that he led the US during WW2 in a really good way. Reagans economic/military race which bled the Soviet economy comes also to my mind. Other than that, what else. The Bushes ? Nah, Bush the older inherited Reagan's investment in the US armed forces. Bush jr... Nothing great there... Just skilled military with resources. I just wonder how long the US taxpayers will shell out the money for the Iraqi project.... WW1 was a true attrition war. That was won with the sheer manpower and industrial resources of the US. It would be very unvise to ignore the industrial and technological resources of the EU. I know that the EU countries hasn't invested so much in the military, but on the other hand the taxpayers money has gone into social welfare etc. Imagine that in most EU countries you have FREE healthcare for all, or for a very modest fee of $10-$30/visit to the doctor, regardless of speciality. Also, EU countries has laws against budget deficits, so that we won't borrow money to government expenditures, which are NEVER investments that'll pay back. Borrowing money is best done in the private sector, where money can be earnt... But what do I know as a poor EU citizen... foobar67

What this???? There was a world before 1776!!!!! Unbelieveable that europeans and the world see us as ignorant of history and culture, as well as a threat! Americans have always hated taxes, no i tell a lie... people hate taxes no matter what country you live in! But, atleast the iraqi children don't have to look in their school books anymore and see the man who destroyed many of their parents, and if not, their lives!

Ouch!!! Some catty remarks ensued there Desertdog, probably because your original remarks, although true, were a bit one sided. America does have a debit ledger which you may have blindsided yourself too. How you eventually balance the ledger depends on a few weighted factors and how you weigh them. For me I would say the ledger is in the positive mainly because I recognise the good intent and sacrifice of the American people (which is somewhat separate from US govt and the ruling clique/establishment). But I also know that American policy has greatly harmed others ? sometimes cynically, sometime unthinking collateral damage. One thing must be recognised is that at all times America has acted in it own self interest. The flow on benefit is somewhat coincidental. Ditto all other empires including the British. The flow on benefit in the post WW2 period does seem to be more deliberate and idealistically driven. If not idealistic definitely wise. The Europeans here tend to forget their own European history. For two thousand years of European civilisation the end of one war was the beginning of the next. America came in and, through policy, set up the peaceful Europe that propers today. Sure, history was with them (the outside enemy Russia certainly helped) but I give credit to Gen Marshall who set up the office of military government for Europe (by whatever name) in early 1942 ? it was policy not accident. I doubt if it would have been the same peace if France or Britain or Russia had been the architects ? they all would have screwed a deal that benefited themselves and screwed others thereby set up the next round of discontent (war). (The curious thing is that America probably did more for European unity than any one other nation despite that it may one day be a rival to the US. I believe Roosevelt and Marshall would have been wise enough to realise this but did it out of idealism ? The 'text' book says 'devide and conquer. Ditto their ending of colonialism and the start of the UN with the Nth Atlantic charter. Both of which were in America?s interest but were also idealistic in that America didn?t just oust the colonial powers and replaced them with their own hegemony). Although I believe there is a flow on benefit today I don?t think it is as obvious or as idealistically driven (the benefits are definitely argued). While it is certainly true that America gives a great deal of necessary leadership to the world at the moment I would stop short of describing it as great or wise. But then it is doing a job no other nation or the UN can do or is willing to do. The complexities are such it is probably that no other nation or the UN could lead greatly or wisely and to the satisfaction of all. Better by degrees maybe; greatly or wisely I doubt it. Most others seem to opt for ?do nothing? or ?let?s talk about it?. The ?do nothing? is not an option and ?let?s talk about? it has it limits. Cheers, LXI p.s. I?m an Australian and not a Yank if anyone curious.

First of All I'm an American but I do think Desertdog went a little far. What is too bad is that the European's on this board were quick to bash him and our country. While his claims are a little extreme there are some truths to this. First of all he's right in the fact the United States has fought many wars to liberate other people. While our intentions may or may not have been the best, we still were there when needed. The whole thing about the US and it's Allies doing good things with the worlds resources, I think we can all aggree that's not true. The US and it's Allies eat up most of the worlds resources and throw fits when those resources that we are buying from countries suddenly became expensive. When he talks about how we have sacrificed own lives for the liberty of others. Just look at the graveyards spread out throughout Europe. They're easy to see. Lot's of little White Crosses and Stars of David. The lastest total on our casulties in WWII are over 400,000 dead. His comment about tax dollars is also true. We are going to give Irag and Afghan 87 billion dollars! That's a lot of money. How much was European Union's intially donation? 240 million? Desertdog maybe have strong opinions, but most Americans are for more moderate. We do not appreciate being called ignorate and uncultured. I'm sure if any of you came to the United States and spent sometime with Americans you would think other wise. Stop basing your opinions on Americans by seeing our President and a few idiots on CNN. Europe had it's far share of less then quality leaders. Stop being so high and mighty and look at your own history. Yes we pay for our healthcare, So does Europe. They just do it through higher tax rates. I get really good health insurance for about 250 a month. My doctor visits are less then $10 a visit and any prescription is $5 regardless or what it is. Many American's don't have health care and we need to fix that, but socialized medicine is not the answer. To claim that US has had great leaders is not a stretch. How could anyone argue that FDR was not a great leader, or Lincoln, Or Marshall, Or Eisenhower. I am not about to sit here and write about all of europe's problems as some the people on this board have written about problems in the US. You don't live here so you really don't know what it is like. What you see is stuff of the web and the BBC. How do you know how well or education system is? I'm sure alot schools in Urban centers in Europe are just as bad as a School in Detriot or LA. I am begining to wonder how American scientists and engineers keep coming up with lots breakthroughs with such a terrible education system. Must be luck or home schooling? Sorry for the rant, but the fact is that one guy with a very strong opinion right or wrong has the right to post his thoughts. If you don't like them you don't have to reduce yourselves to calling him names and bashing his country. Why don't you try arguing with him by using facts our just leave the post alone. P.S. LXI that was a good post. The most rational post I've seen on this site in a while.
