F22    1/21/2005 7:46:41 PM
Who would it be? Some possible candidates:

Captain Kirk from Star Trek
Captain Sisco from Deep Space 9
Captain Sheridan from Babylon 5
Commander Adama from Battlestar Galactica
Aragorn from Lord of the Rings
General Bel Riose from Asimov's Foundation series

Your thoughts, please.

**Richard Sharpe of the 95th Rifles.** - But he commanded in the South Essex (a fictional unit) While the 95th is an actual unit. Excellent books though. Sci-Fi I'm a James T Kirk fan Movies - Kelly from Kelly's Heros or maybe Sgt Hulka from Stripes ;-)

Well, my own personal favorite would be Andrew Wiggin, from Ender's Game.

>>Movies - Kelly from Kelly's Heros or maybe Sgt Hulka from Stripes ;-)<< Movies: 1) Col. Kirby from The Green Berets. 2) SSG Worcester from Hamburger Hill. 3) Color Sergeant Bourne from Zulu (he might be based on a real person though) 4) Ranger Captain Woodrow F. Call from Lonesome Dove, a para-military leader. 5) Magua from Last of the Mohicans, even if he flubbed it at the end.

Horatio Hornblower is not fictional -a very biography by Northcote Parkinson (yes that one).

Is Kirk fictional, I thought he was an MP for the conservatives in Denmark (he is a fisherman) - had a bit of a tiff with the Royal Navy. The First Sealord a Klingon - seems about right.

Kim "Bomber" Beasley. A wannabe Aussie General from the fictional factional side of the political Left. ;)

Are you saying that Hornblower was based on a real person or that in fact HH was a real person whose exploits were fictionalized?

Donal Graeme from Gordon R. Dickson's Dorsai novels is probably the greatest in terms of what he was supposed to be able to accomplish. Also he was backed up by a planet full of your typical "greatest" warriors in the galaxy. He was described as being able to use hunches and intuition the way lesser men can use logic and facts. So he always knew what the best thing to do was and generally seemed to litterally be a couple of years ahead of his opposition, in terms of his planning. David Drake's Col. Alos Hammer was one of the more realistic leaders in Military SF. Drake has a talant for conveying the nasty nitty-gritty of combat.
