Herc the Merc    5/9/2006 2:07:57 PM
There are several political leaders in play--Bush-Cheney, Wu Jintao (China), Manmohan Singh (India), Putin (Russia), Musharraf (pak), John Howard (aust), Ahmadnibad-Khameni(Iran), Ehud Olmert (Israel), Hugo Chavez (Venezuala), Chirac (France), Tony Blair (UK), whoever in Iraq & Karzai(Afghanistan), Assad jr(Syria). For achieving or net improvement in foreign policy strategic objectives how would u rank
them??

I think Musharrif in Pakistan has the most volitile position. He is a one man bulwark against a nuclear armed Pakistan controlled by radical Islamists. He also has been instrumental in balancing the demands of the ISS and keeping the peace with India.

I don't know about achievment or improvement in foreign policy, but Chavez just might be the most dangerous to the U.S. Or, if not the most dangerous, at least more dangerous than many people would give him credit for. By himself maybe he would be no big deal, but he's been talking with Iran and China.

I don't think any South-American leader is dangerous, the economies of all these countries is far to lopsided, thus vulnerable.

Chavez could be dangerous because he can allow China substantial basing in Venuezuela. China is already there in small numbers.

It's a bit of a loaded question: which is most successful at achieving foreign policy goals. I say this because some goals are more ambitious/difficult than others. For example, Hugo Chavez has a goal of spreading his socialist revolution throughout Latin America. A very ambitious goal. George W Bush has a goal of establishing peaceful, democratic governments throughout the Middle East. Again, very ambitious. Tony Blair seems to be content to economically integrate the UK with Europe. Ambitious, but at more modest level. So I would suggest the best way for us to look at this issue is to first examine, what are the foreign policy goals of the various leaders?
