Be a servant leader. You (the leader) are there for the troops and the mission, the troops and the mission aren't there for you. So you have to be technically and tactically proficient and genuinely care about your troops and your duty. This is usually summed up as don't order your troops to do anything unless you can and will do it yourself. On the personality side you have to be yourself, of course, but I would personally rather be led by a Richard Winters than a George Patton type. For what it's worth Darby and Gavin were supposedly quieter men as well. If you're looking for Marine Corps examples I'd prefer to be led by Mike Edson than Chesty Puller.
