Subject: Becoming a Warrant Officer
colts    1/25/2007 7:55:32 PM
Can anyone tell me about warrant officers? I found the basic eligibility requirments, and what they are. But there must be more, would they typically be the officers in the field? On the spec ops? The force recon officers? The best way to become one? Should I go in with my degree? Or get it while I am in? I was talking to a Marine the other day and he said that I should get my degree while I am in the Corps, that way I would have rank over other people in and it would be easier to get promoted when the time comes? But I also think that promotion might come faster if I had my degree when I get in. Any help is greatfull.
thanks

macawman    What is a WO?   6/1/2007 5:11:59 PM
In the Army a WO is a technician ie. helo pilot/2nd seat weapons opr, MI specialties like Electronic Warfare tech, Humint tech, etc.  About 70% of the US Army WOs are aviators.  Today's Army WO requires a four year degree to advance to W3 grade and above.  Several years ago the Army began commissioning WOs so they could take platoon leader and company grade slots.  This was a mistake because it created career rivalry between Lts/Cpts and WOs for command slots.

That Marine recruiter (was to say the least) leading you on.  If you join the Army or the Marines, you will more than likely be deployed into a combat zone and will not have the time nor the inclination to take college courses.

Army WO eligibility: Must be and E-5(P)  promotable.  I got my W2 grade through a officer peer review board as an E-7 NCO.
