IMO, it'd be far smarter for the Aussies to just buy 12 Virginia class boats from the US. They'd save a lot of money and have a fleet of far more formidable nuclear attack boats.

Actually, if they bought Virginia's they probably wouldn't need all 12.  Given the greater speed and endurance of a nuke they would spend more time on patrol and less in transit.
 
A submerged AIP sub is stealthy, but not very mobile.
