"In 1979, it was the National Guard who took down the Islamic radicals who had invaded the Grand Mosque in Mecca."
After losing 127 men trying to retake the Grand Mosque, the Saudis turned to the French GIGN, who sent three advisers (who were hurriedly "converted" to Islam) to assist the National Guard. They trained and equipped the Saudi forces who eventually retook the Grand Mosque using CB combat gas.
Ironically it was a retired National Guard corporal who led the takeover of the Grand Mosque arguing the Al-Saud dynasty had lost its legitimacy, was corrupt and destroying Saudi culture by opening up to the West.

. . . to mention Vinnell-Arabia... or OPM-SANG or what advisors deployed with the SANG to Bahrain.  What would the SANG be without them?
