Subject: Best Career Choice - CIA or NSA?
Ashley-the-man    6/24/2005 1:53:47 AM
Got a daughter who has graduated with a degree in Political Science and Business Administration. In an offhand remark she said she might like to work for the CIA or FBI. I wrote and asked "why not consider NSA."

Any thoughts as to which alphabet agency would be the most interesting and best avenue for advancement?

CIA and NSA almost require language training in Chinese (excellent long term potential) or Arabic/Farsi.

Probably not many alumni from any of the above, but who knows?

I don't know what it's like to work in either of those two agencies, but I am familiar in general with what kind of reporting that comes from those two agencies. Given your daughter's background, I'd assume she'd find working at CIA more interesting than at NSA. NSA solely deals with information gathered through SIGINT, and even though that can include the more social, economic, and political aspects of target nations, in general it's mostly about the military capabilities of target nations. However since she already sounds interested in intelligence, I'm sure any of them would have some areas she would like. Of course, then there's the difference between working in northern Virginia or in Laurel, MD on Ft. Meade. Naturally I'd rather live in Virginia than liberal Maryland (and I do), but on the other hand, northern Virginia is very expensive and the traffic sucks. Displacedjim

"if you have the language skills you can write your own ticket really...it all depends on what she wants to do..interanl or external...what region or comparment of foreign service, hell she might like the state dept.//hmm///" I'm pretty sure she has not used drugs. Trying to understand State Department policy and it's implementition without the insight that mind altering drugs would impart would put her at a disadvantage.

Would working for the state department be comparable to being a spokesperson for a corporation, no matter who really makes the decision you must go out and take the flak for it? No thanks, being a spook is better.

I would tend to agree with Displaced Jim. Plus there are still a few housing gems in the democracy blvd area... Also, just in the last few weeks, I heard that there was an "affordable housing in DC" public meeting story on npr.org so you might find some tips there. cheers w

I had a professor in college who was working at the NSA. He said it was a great place to work..he couldn't have said more things about it. Actually, he got me an interview there, needless to say they didn't want me. :-(
