Lately, the Israeli's have been getting friendly with the Pakistani's; the Isreali's had gone ahead with the pull-out and until a few days ago you'd had a period of relative calm in the region.
Only Egypt and Jordan have so far signed signed peace agreeement's with Israel, which leaves country's like Iran which, in the past, have made it crystal clear that they would like to see Israel wiped off the face of the Earth. Syria would like to do the same, as would certain special interests groups in Saudi Arabia.
For the Israeli's and Palestinian's, there's not a day goes by that they aren't subjected to news regarding the ongoing peace process between the two countries...but for the rest of the world, we've had the Asian Earthquake and the hurricanes in the US on the front page of the international section of the newspapers.
Iran wanted to get the issue back on the front page, and one way of doing that was by making these statements.
Iran also wants to get a response out of the US, the UK and the EU. Iran wants to develop it's own nuclear weapon's capability...but it's not only got to get past the objections of the US, the UK, the EU and the IAEA, but it's also to deal with the objections of some of it's less than friendly neighbours, like the Saudi's and the Egyptians. Any harsh diplomatic response by either the Americans or British to these statements out of Tehran will have the effect of garnering increased support for the Iranians, both internally and externally. Most Pakistani's, Syrians, Egyptians and Palestinians think, anyway, that the US throws far too much of it's weight around in the Middle East and that the US supports (policitically, financially and militarily) the Israeli's whatever they do.
So now you've got a situation where Iran is already seen as the David standing up against the US and Israeli Goliath. Iran wants it's own nukes and it's made statements to the effect that it wants Israel wiped off the face of the earth...a view which, sadly, is shared by the masses in the Middle East and abroad, and a number of governments in the Middle East.
The Iranians will get what they want out ofmaking these statements...the Israeli's will make themselves look like right dipsticks by blowing it out of all proportions. If tomorrow the Iranians decided to launch a number of chemical-tipped ballistic missiles at the Israeli's, i've no doubt the Israeli's would have a special forces team in there destroying the missile sites before you could say 'alluah akbar'. Fortunately, Iran doesn't pose a significant threat to Israel, as things stand at the moment. Sadly, however, Israel will milk these latest statements for all they're worth. Israel's image in the middle east will no doubt suffer as a result. |
