Subject: Torture

What a lovely topic! Tom Clancy had one in one of his novels, where the victim, a young Russian lady, was dressed in a wetsuit, with life support, microphone and speakers all set up, and then suspended in a tank of water, without sight. She thought she was in some strange world between that and some drugs. The interogator got everything out of her and when they let her out, she thanked the interrogator profusely for saving her. I always wondered if that was just the author's imagination or if anyone really ever tried that.

That was The Cardinal of the Kremlin. And yes, the technique (called sensory deprivation) is very real. I have no clue if it actually works as well as is depicted in the book, though.

People being tortured will likely tell the interrogator(s) anything and everything, even if there's no substance to what he/she is saying, just to stop the pain. Talking of torture techniques, i heard the Soviet intelligence services used to plunge people's hands into pots of boiling water and pull the skin off whilst the person was being restrained. They also used to force people to watch their relatives cremated alive, then tell 'em they were next for up if they didn't co-operate with the intelligence/security services.
