When do you think the Russians are going to cotton onto the fact that politicising the armed forces is going to hinder rather than help the development of modern professional armed forces?

Are you sure it's about polotics Matt? I think the Russians feel that if they have someone standing behind their 'front line troops' with HMGs and SMGs and waving a pistol shouting, "Forward, no retreat, victory or death - cowards and traitors will be shot!", then those frontline grunts will be VERY motivated... hey, it 'worked' for them in the Great Patriotic War, right? ;o) E.

Last time I checked my fellow whoosez learned history from 1). Movies/TV 2). Video Games. Well, what can I say, Eldildobandito? Focking Congrats! To Mr. Smith: dummie, if they returned to the old system, they probably had a reason, nay? If you want to understand what NKVD was for, especially the political officers assigned to the armed forces, learn about the Russian revolution of 1917, its subsequent betrayal by Lenin and the Bolsheviks, the Russian "Civil" War (12 foreign nations were waging it against the Reds). The supposedly professional, non-political US works a lot better than the Russian in this aspect. Oh, yeah, a lot bloody better! 75% of the whole army bloody Republicans! Are they fascists? Well, at least they're right wing and militaristic...

Well, at least they're right wing and militaristic...- Well you could point out that the Military was turned republican by the actions of the Carter and Clinton administrations. After each of those regime , the military shifted further republican. Can you really be apolitical when you own administration starts giving you the shaft? As for the political shift, one must also point out that the elimination of the draft led to a HIGHER educational status of the troops. Thus more republicans.
