LRDG/SRR

In a way, yes, covert reconnaissance and intelligence missions behind enemy lines. but still the LRDG were more a recon and raiding unit. 14 Company operators (male and female) operate(d) under cover using unmarked vehicles. More 'intelligence oriented' if you get my meaning.
For an interesting inside look at 14 Company, read the book written by one of their operators about his time in North Ireland, appropriately called "The Operators" by James Rennie. You'll get a better idea how the LRDG and SRR are similar and different in their respective missions, training etc. (interestingly both units worked/work with the SAS)

Whether or not this unit was a "success" depends very much on which side of the struggle one stood.
Many Irish Republicans still maintain that these units carried out revenge operations fully a decade after the main body of the IRA turned to the courts instead of violence to fight their battles.
Scores of Irish Catholics were killed or imprisoned long after any alleged wrongdoing had occurred and Britain continues to refer to the IRA as terrorists though the Irish consider them soldiers who fought in a war.
At this point though most agree that it is good that the fighting and suffering is ended- mostly.

SRR vs IRA

From a strictly 'technical' point of view I would say the SRR is a success.
IMHO the IRA are a bunch of terrorists hiding behind lofty claims, funded by American money and, while he was still alive, by Libya's Gaddafi.
Targeting civilians with time bombs then the rescue services with a second bomb, is more the hallmark of a terrorist organisation don't you think? I'm not saying the British have always played fair in Northern Ireland either.
