Discussion as to what the German Wehrmacht did in the face of German industrial collapse.

I don't have the sources in front of me, but from memory it took about 300,000 man hours to build a Siberian Tiger, about 170,000 hours to build a Panther, and about 70,000 hours to build either a late war Korval or a Stug. The Panzer III took about 50,000+ hours. In each case though you have to also add the cost of steels, rubber, plastic, copper, manganese, zinc, chrome, etc. A lot ofwhat went into a tank was rare and EXPENSIVE for Germany. Materials substitution for such things that the allies took for granted such as bearing seals or engine gaskets, where we could use cork or synthetic rubber treated to handle the heat, just wasn't available to the Germans. Add to that the clockmaker insanity of their engineers and you get complex machines that took forever to make and which were mechanically unreliab;le because the Germans couldn't manufacture the MATERIALS (alloys and plastics) they desired.

>The best explanation was that the PZKWIV (Korval) was far more expensive and took longer to build. The Germans needed numbersin 1939 as well as their own "cruiser" tank..

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I can't find a source that states that reason or the costs/manufacturing time of the PzIII vs PZ IV, however maybe I'll find the info
