RetiredCanadain ive contacts with several tankers in the Dutch army,im in training for tank driver right now,and i can tell you that the special shaped front armor on the Leo2A5/6 is ''empty''! Behind that armor is the old armor of the Leo2 A4 version. The Leopard2A6 isn't a cheaper version of the STRV 122,the hull is a complete new design,it has Swedisch GPS system and German/Swedisch FireControlSystem, extra top armor is also made by the Swedisch, front armor is also different than that on the German Leo2A6,the only version of the Leopard that is absolutly superior to all tanks at the moment is the Leopard2A6EX but this tank is just a prototype with every on it. From the extra Top-Armor to the completely new Hull with 130HP extra, that makes 1630HP!!! And many country's are using the Leo2A4/5,parts are available from almost every western country because many tanks are using the same mechanical parts like the leopard has. Germany is NOT the only country using the A6 version The Netherlands (where i live) are using this version to. I think you must look deaper into your cavalry-army book, because Leo2's-M1A2's etc etc are totally different than the Leopard1. Close to half of the weight of modern MBT's? than the Leo1 must weight about 32Ton i think, but it wieght 46Tom if im not mistaken,Leopard2A56 is close to 65Ton.

If the Leopard1 has great mobility, why did they make the Leopard2 than? I think Germany is coming with a new hull for the A6 in about 2/3 years, because the 25 year old hull can't carry the new turret as good as it carried the Leopard2A4 turret, you hear all kind of weard sounds inside the tank, because its heavy to carry the new turret...

The Leopard 2A6 is not "absolutly better then all tanks out there." It may have some better features, but the M1A1, A2, Chally 2, and Merk 4 would have no prob in a fight with it. Pretty much equal.

Take the M1A1 away, this is a tank that is a generation behind the Leopard2A6 and A5 The Leopard2A6EX (EX!) is better than M1A2SEP but it isn't in use so... Merkava 4 has a mutch different role than Leopard2A6 so count that one out too,its in 10th place do.

I think the armor of Merkava4 is great, but i think they have mostly designed it against RPG.

>>You are right they aren't using Chobam like i said in my previous post, but most of the people think Leopard-Abrams-Challenger-Merkava-... are all using the same armor Chobam!<< Not to be pedantic, but Chobham does refer to the original UK armor technology (which was provided to the US, so, yes, M1 uses 'Chobham' armor in a precise sense), but it is also used more generally to refer to any similar, modern composite armor matrix. Rather like 'Aspirin' is both the name of a specific product and also a generic term. >>Its a MBT not a medium tank it is tested and has gain 4th place in worlds best tank rating...<< Yes, but by what criteria? >>People that say M! and Chally are proven in REAL combat...WHERE!!! Oh yeah i can think of something. Very Very old Iraqi T-55 tanks that where out of ammunition ayway when the Abrams and challenger's arrived,o yeah they had some digged in T-72 tanks to,that where probably out of fuel.<< This statement displays an unintentional ignorance, or deliberate misrepresentation, of the First Gulf War. Republican Guard Forces Command units equipped with T-72s fought hard, and died hard -- even in those instances like the Battle of 73 Easting, where weather negated American air power and superior direct-fire acquisition and engagement ranges. >>The only thing that is really proven is FCS in tank competitions. And in these competitions the Leopard came 1st place all the time.<< Sorry, but a Leo2A6 with an older generation x12 primary sight cannot outperform an M1A2SEP with a x50 power current generation primary sight.

>>The Leopard2A6EX (EX!) is better than M1A2SEP but it isn't in use so...<< In what ways is Leo2A6EX superior to M1A2SEP?

>>Also there working on m1a3s with the new lv100 engine.. (coming out around 2005/06 history channel) << I've said it before, I'll say it again . . . The new, more fuel-efficient, powerpack for the M1 is a refit for the entire fleet, not a feature of the M1A3. I have never seen any official discussion of an M1A3 -- the M1A2SEP is, essentially, an "M1A3" but there is not any funding for the development or fielding of an -A3 version. If we were 12-24 months out from fielding a new mark of the M1 family, it would be discussed in places like Armor magazine, and has not been to the best of my knowledge. So . . . M1A3 versus Leo2A6EX might be a fair match up . . .

>>I think the armor of Merkava4 is great, but i think they have mostly designed it against RPG << It is always good to think . . . but, no. Merk 4 was designed to meet not only Syrian T-72s, but also Egyptian M1A1s and Saudi M1A2s, if Israel's strategic nightmare occurrs.
