The turrets I saw being rebuilt to the A5 standard in Kassel had the following done: The turret hydraulics were removed, and turret electric drive installed. The EMES 15 computer was upgraded. Attachment points for the add on armour was installed, and the add-on armour installed. A TV camera was installed at the rear of the turret to aid the driver when reversing. The commanders FCS was upgraded to a fully independant system (hunter killer). There may have been others, I can't remember.....

Oh, I did remember something else. Remember I mentioned the weight of the 122 as well over 70 tonnes? I was both wrong and right, at the same time. The only variant that weighs over 70 tonnes in the 122M variant, of which I believe only 10 have been produced. The German equivelent is the Leo2A6M, of which 15 have been produced. The reason for the low numbers is the weight, these are supposedly the heavist tanks in the world, with the best top attack and mine protection of any other AFV.

''Attachment points for the add on armour was installed, and the add-on armour installed.'' Right,so the A4 armor is NOT removed (is impossible),A4 armor was about 900MM thick,add-on armor (A5)is about the same in lenght! If this wasn't hallow,it was about 900MM thick! Can it be that the front armor of the leopard2A5/A6 is 1800MM thick!!! This is almost 2 meters of steel(laminated),don't you think the weight of the Leopard2A5/A6 would be about 80Tons or something near that? Right, thats impossible, conclusion; this add-on armor is hallow!

On the thickness of armor.. I always thought that was classified? When ever I've read anything on tank armor its almost always been "approximate equivalent of xxx mm of steel" So I suppose that could mean they "guess" that 75mm of Chobam maybe offers 100mm of steel protection.. (those numbers are just made up by the way, I have no clue what accurate appoximate values would be...) Am I wrong here?

Leopard2A4 armor is about 900MM thick, but because its in an angle like \ it offers more protection.

You are correct, modern armor is measured as it's equivalent thickness of rolled homogeneous steel. When someone says that the M1A2 has 900mm of armor (or whatever it is now) they mean it has the equivalent protection to 900mm of RH steel, not that the armor is actually 900mm thick. Side note to Jeffrey, adding another meter of applique would make the Leo2 huge. I can't imagine they actually added another meter on the turret. The turret would be bigger than the Abrams or Chally turret by a lot. Clearance through towns, on railcars and ships would be just about impossible, especially in Western Europe.

As far as I know, the actual thickness of the M1A2 armor is about 300-400mm but it provides about 1000mm of protection vs KE rounds

Im talking about the front of the turret mike_golf not the sides of the tank, the A5/A6 turret is about 80 cm longer than the Leopard2 turret. Read the previous posts carefully, there im explaining that it IS hallow and that it CANT be full of laminated ''chobam'' armor Try to understand my bad english :>)

Another thing to think about, why would a tank be so BIG and weight so mutch,if it has only 30/40MM of armor?

''The Leo2A5 was built as an affordable version of the 122, and is, in fact, an upgrade of older Leo2's. The Leo 2A6 are new production tanks, with various improvements, but have about 95% parts commonality with the A5.'' The Leopard2A5 an affordable version of the STRV 122??? The Leopard2A5 was already in service for about 8 years when the Swedisch where making a contract build Leopard2A5 the STRV 122,its known that the Leo2A5 hull is an upgrade of older leo 2 hulls. And the Lepard2A6 isn't totally new,it only has a new 1.30 meters longer gun,the L55,as a result;1: An improved kinetic energy ammunition LKE 2 could be used very effectively,The effect of the kinetic energy projectile on an enemy target is achieved by 1) the penetrator length and projectile mass and the impact velocity and 2) the interaction between the projectile and the target. The penetrator material is heavy tungsten powder in a monoblock structure. The improved kinetic energy ammunition has higher muzzle energy and recoil forces. 3:
