Subject: K1A1/ M1A2 or LeClerc

Besides the obvious choice of M1A2 Abrams, Australia may consider the Korean K1A1. Here's why:

-It is developed in conjunction with the US M1 technology- reduces compatibility issues with the U.S- the only ally with the airlift capability for resupply in a crisis. MAC for example was able to resupply Israel in '73 only because it had compatible weapon systems.

- It is geared for optimum mobility in the diverse terrain of the Korean peninsula, which include mountains, jungle, paddy fields and swamp.Low ground pressure allows it to successfully manoeuvre in sodden or sandy terrain. It can mount a 60% gradient(max). These are the conditions Australia is likely to face in case of war/ deployment.

- The K1A1 is an upgraded version with a 120mm(same gun as M1A2) smoothbore gun, together with an improved gun and turret drive system. K1A2 has a demonstrated first round hit probability of greater than 90% when firing on the move at a moving target.

- It is cheaper.

So why not. If it is good enough to face-off at the DMZ then it is more than enough for anything the US
