Russian T90 vs American M1A2 Abrams - Which is better? If these tanks fought in battle, which would suffer more casualties, which one is superior? What are their advantages? Any information would be helpful.

 4. The Russians have a sputtering GPS called GLONASS that they now develop (see [2] above.).

GLONASS has been around for a while, but I'm not sure it still qualifies as an effective global constellation anymore.  ie it has the numbers for full global coverage, but does not have the numbers for overlap or up tempo monitoring in small timeslots.

the russians more or less acknowledge this in absentia as they've been trying to launch more birds as well as sucker the indians into co-funding under the guise of co-development.  one would think that the indians having been bitten once in the way that they got burnt on yakhont/p800/brahmos - but, no, slow learners.

bottomline, not enough sats for full up tempo overlapped global racetracking, but enough to be 2nd best.  Baidu however is likely to overtake as the chinese have greater resources, money, and more importantly, political will and intent.

Having a semi working gps is not even remotely similar to having a fully developed system like BFT.

At least since the late 80s.

Well, they don't really have much choice do they, given the way the US has treated them in the past?

Baidu is likely the number one US target in near earth space after the Shenzhou satellite constellations, don't you think?

The PRC bandits tend to be one dimensional in their war-fighting doctrine and thinking Never mind the carrier pigeon BS I read on SP in some of the China Navy articles. Those idiots haven't really learned the modern EW lessons at all. The Russian STAVKA tries to avoid romantic nonsense when they have another choice and way  to do things. Those guys REALLY do train and will use vacuum tube tech, flares, telegraphy and even semaphore or whatever they have to use, when their Russian made solid state electronics go kaput

that's true, but I wasn't talking about GLONASS in a BFT context.  ie it was about a comparative constellation issue.

at best GLONASS is global, in reality, it's uncompetitive to US GPS constellations due to redundancy of numbers, quality of persistence tied to those numbers etc...  eg they can only do large slices, they can't overlap and make those slices smaller.  small slices = greater confidence in the harvest.

at the risk of stating the obvious, BFT is more than just satellites. both russia and china are nowhere in the cnmpanion solution development curve, but I'd argue that the chinese will leapfrog the ruusians anyway within the next 5.

"General Alexander Postnikov,  who is commander of the Russian ground forces,  announced in Pravda that Russia weapons are inferior to both US weapons and those made by China.  ?The combat vehicle arsenal, artillery systems and small arms produced by the domestic defense industry fall behind NATO and even Chinese arms,?  he said.

He said the Russian T-90 tank was awful,  and was ?a 17th modification of the Soviet T-72 tank produced since 1973.?  He would rather purchase German Leopard tanks from Germany,  Postnikov said."

Sure, he's just trying to get money for modernization, but what does this do for foreign sales?

They would have to overhaul their current armoured tactics to utilize the Leopards to their fullest potential.  If they used a tank like the Leopard the way they currently use their T80s and T90s they would lose a lot.  Current Russian doctrine would not well suit most Western MBT designs, IMHO.

As far as foreign sales goes, was it really doing all that well anyways?  I thought the only country to buy any significant number was India.

Here's another good read about how awesome and advanced the Russian space program was.

Russia?s T-95 Tank Emerge

http://images.defensetech.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Russiantank1.jpg" width="490" modo="false" />

Check this out. These grainy images are supposedly pictures of the prototype of Russia?s T-95 tank which was to have been the basis for a 21st Century Russian armor fleet. Moscow is said to have scrapped funding for the tank last year yet still withheld most details of the behemoth. However, thanks to a tipster, DT has some speculative info on the beast.

From what I?ve been able to learn from a translated data sheet found on the website, http://btvt.narod.ru/index.html&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&twu=1&usg=ALkJrhgbEG-KOLyA6rVIlZkLyCHodhWqPg">Tankpower.

Apparently, the vehicle, which Russian defense officials apparently envisioned as a ?fundamental leap forward? in Russian armor, features a completely automated turret with its 152-millimeter main gun being fed via autoloader, leaving the entire crew in the heavily armored front section of the tank?s hull, separated from the turret by blast walls. All of this is done in an effort to dramatically increase crew survivability in the event of an anti-tank round piercing the turret. It looks like the Ruskies were also working to protect the tanks weapons from being taken out easily; the gun?s auto-loader is set high above the turret?s floor to minimize the risk of being taken out by an anti-tank mine.  Fuel cells are also kept separate from the turret area in an effort to keep a round that penetrates the turret from igniting the tanks fuel.

The beast was also supposed to come with a digital information management system, showing the crew how many rounds of ammunition are left, fuel levels and the overall health of the tank. The T-95 was also supposed to be able to share information with other tanks in battlefield formations, kind of like the U.S.? net-centric approach to fighting.

Here are some more images of the tank. Have additional details? Share em in the comments.
