So the terrorist / freedom fighter hiding in a crowd, preferably of women and children, whips out his Kalashnikov and fires off a burst, the automatic system responds, and you have an instant 'atrocity'.

Somehow I don't think this system will much market potential.

Back during the Vietnam war, work was done on a device that used a laser.  It was supposed to detect muzzle flashes and automatically fire a green laser at the source, to blind the crew.  It was dropped as inhumane.

Well, pretty sure there'd be a mechanism to disable it in urban environments. If it is designed for military use in contested areas, then conventional warfare doesn't take such things into account.
And if the Israelis have demonstrated anything in the last few rounds of conflicts, its that they will inflict civilian casualties on the enemy in order to protect their own. Not entering into the morality of such decisions, as nasty as they sound, they're within the scope of the Geneva conventions (those that put civilians in harms way are the ones to be held accountable for them becoming casualties).
A quick peruse through wiki would seem to indicate that Israel is by and large responsible for all human shields being used and Hamas/Hezbolah/IS/(insert which ever scum sucking anal whoring terrorist group you'd like here) have all been shown to be innocent of the practice…….
Shows wiki simply work on critical mass and that millions of savages have learnt how to use a computer. Shame.
