Subject: Nuclear weapons incident, how much dangerous ?
bravoss    10/19/2007 7:02:52 PM
As you all probably already heard about the incident that happened in August this year, when six cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads were attached under the wings of the B-52 instead of six cruise missiles with dummy warheads sent for decommissioning. How dangerous was that incident ? In what scenarios could those nukes go off ? The USAF says that those missiles were at no time in configuration for deployment. What would happen if the same mistake happened on a training exercise... If the plane smashed the ground would the nukes go off ?

No, if the plane crashed the worst that could happen would be a 'dirty bomb' if the weapon core was breached. Nukes (modern ones), will pretty much only go off if you tell them to go off.
