The solution is staring us in the face --- buy new F-16s. Deliveries to the US military ended more than a decade ago, and production for export was supposed to have ended in 2013, but new orders have pushed the end of the F-16's production into 2017;

The USAF also has the option to buy the F-16E/F, which is already in service with Israel and the UAE, and South Korea recently ordered them as well;

After all, it's not like the F-35 will ever meet the USAF's needs. Remember when it was sold on Congress as the "Affordable Fighter"? The USAF used *those actual words* in describing it;
The USAF promised in 2000 that it would be in full operational service by 2004. By 2004, they said it would be 2008. By 2008, it was promised to be 2012. Today, in 2014, it STILL isn't operational, despite over 100 having been built (that's an awful lot of de-facto, retroactive prototypes). The year it becomes battle-ready is always 4 years into the future from whatever the date happens to be at the time.

The USAF needs new fighters yesterday (literally), and they need to buy fighters that exist and are affordable --- not $350 Million apiece pretend-fighters. Otherwise, the whole inventory will end up like those F-16Ds.
