Subject: SDSR Promises UK defence budget increase from 2015 onwards
JTR~~    9/19/2011 1:51:58 PM
I have recently noted several articles floating around on the internet in regards to a supposed budgetary increase to the UK defence budget following the 2015 general election. the articles suggest (through statements made by politicians) that the budget will see an increase in order to accommodate for the plethora of military projects that Britain is bringing online in the near future and to allow for the British militaries "Future Forces 2020" program to be implemented. However there has been little mentioned as to whether or not the budgetary increase will be a permanent feature and not merely reduced once again upon completion of the incoming programs. Further to this there has been mention of a year on year increase in the realms of 1-2% in "real term" increases. this in itself would seem to insinuate that the budgetary rise either will be a long term commitment as in the increased budget would stay as the new defence spending budget or that the implementation of Future Force 2020 will take longer than anticipated (i sincerely hope it is the former of the two scenarios). Details remain sketchy as it does not provide any consistent figures as to how long the budgetary increases will continue for or indeed how much they will be worth. The question that i would really like to know the answer to however is that could this be part of a wider government plan in the long term to finally make some form of commitment to Britain's national defence and increase our capability? May it have been what they were planning all along and have chosen 2015 in order to avoid opposition, and that they really were committed to our national defence all along? or have they reached the point now where they realise that far from being a budgetary increase to enhance and expand our military capabilities, are the spending increases necessary to keep what little we have left alive and kicking as things are currently that bad? (Which i would hope is not the case) Your thoughts on the matter, could this finally be an effort to increase Britain’s military capability after a long spate of capability reductions, or is this indeed merely an injection of cash to ensure the British armed forces survival let alone any expansion? Regards JTR~~
