The author is too modest -- the real reason for the annual $60 billion arms purchases by the sheikhs is to keep the U.S. and Europeans happy. In different times it was called a protection racket. But if the American media, whose output often could be mistaken for State Department news handouts, prefer to put it into Washingtonese, so be it.

Just one more thing: there is no "Arab Gulf" -- look up the proper name at either the United Nations or the State Department geographic office.

A shill is a shill. The Qataris have theirs. For whom do you work?

All weapon purchases are political... we ask Embraer not to sell Super Tucanos to Venezuela and compensate by giving them a sweetheart deal else where. We buy technology from the Koreans if they buy ours too... plus countries tend to buy weapons from their allies and to make sure they are integrated into each others arm forces so they can operate seamlessly; we buy from the British all the time but not as much from the French... etc.

Distances in the Gulf are such that you do not need rockets... you can do sea raids and landings here and there as well as drops from the air. All so quick that if you do not posses a lot of mobility they might succeed. So quick reaction and mobility such as that which a helicopter can provide is important.

"we buy from the British all the time but not as much from the French... etc."
Well that's because the French  did themselves in. Charles De Gaulle (sp?) decided that the greatness of France was such that it didn't integrate its forces with NATO, they observed and  went their own way. Then a hammer blow, in 1967 the De Gaulle decided to teach the Israelis a lesson. "No more French aircraft until you do what we tell you what to do".  So the Israelis bought American planes,  then demonstrated to the world that if you want to win you fly American. The French Fighter Aircraft Industry withered on the vine, Without success in combat  their are no  buyers, without buyers no volume production to keep prices down, to assembly lines open and engineers working to improve the product.

France arms industry is a complex story. Tanks, ships and aircrafts are embroiled in domestic politics with influential industries and unions lobbying to keep business in France. Plus an industrial infrastructure that allows you to develop your own weapons also gives you independence from external pressures. And in the last round that I am aware of the Eurofighter was not the type of aircraft that the French needed so they went their own way with the Rafale.

I think that Israel would still be buying some French weapons if it was not for the military assistance packages that we provide plus their own desire to attain a modicum of independence by developing some war fighting technologies on their own. They did at one time develop a jet fighter (Dart) but where pressured not to continue with that.

That Delta wing fighter was called a Kaffir.   In the late 80's the US Navy leased a bunch of them for OPFOR training. It was always startling to see a bunch of MIG type aircraft flying over a USN Master Jet Base.
I understand that a lot of those planes were sold to South American countries who liked the GE engines, British Ejection Seats and  other standard equipment. The plane itself was small and had rugged landing gear so it could take off from roads.  I don't know about its bombing capabilities.

The Israeli's cloned the French Mirage III as the Kfir and either cloned or obtained airframes under the table (the stories are mixed) the French Mirage V as the Nesher.

Rebuilt Neshers were sold to Argentina.  Rebuilt Kfirs to Columbia, Ecuador, Sri Lanka, and the USA

Thank you Warnerd. You are 100% correct. I remember now that they built that series of planes. I appreciate  you giving the straight story, their in no substitute for accuracy and clear thinking.
