Or Poland can shove an F 404 up the Mig 29's tail and give Russia the finger..

If such a thing was feasible, IAI would have done it already. After all, they were the first to shove a J79 up a Mirage III's rear end and make it work.

Major re creation of an aircraft. Will cost a fortune to retool, re jig, etc. For a target market of?
30 Polish planes? How many other customers would do it? Only former soviet block stuck with old migs whom have severed all ties with Russia. Most of them have gotten rid of their migs.
Not cheaper just to buy a bunch of old F-16's and re-furb them into strike packages?

Not to mention that Mig-29 is one of the fighters with worst combat record altogether.

It's feasible to do a swap as there is enough room to squeeze in the FADEC and reroute the plumbing in the Mig. The Klimov is a BIG engine volume wise.

How do you think the USAF kept its 'acquired' Mig 29s flying after the usable supply of Klimovs melted in use?

The J-79 was harder to do. It doesn't look anything like an ATAR plumbing wise and that American sucker is FAT.

Yeah, they needed to redesign the fuselage, widen it, lengthen it, re-enforce the structure and widen the intake and add more intakes for cooling.
And, had the French agreed to keep supplying there was no way Israel would've even attempted anything as ambitious as the Kafir. It was built out of strategic nescesitty, not because it was a good idea. France cut them off, no UK alternative, and no coming US approval, so Israel shit out of luck when it comes to buying an Air force.
I'm just saying it looks like it doesn't make much economical sense to try something like this. I don't know that the Mig is such an awesome package that you spend so much to keep them flying.
Seriously, F-16's. Don't you think they're a better cheaper option? If you can get US approval for an engine, surely you can get approval to buy a whole craft?

We had plans for let's say "NATO MIGs". Mig-29 husk with Israel/France internals and weapons but this idea was thrown away... We could have procured significant number of MiG-29s in 1990-2000 for price $18 milion per new copy was quite nice option. Unwillingness of our politics doomed this project...
But what with engines then?

They would were much cheaper than F-16 48 fighters bought for $4,7 billion (total cost with credit).

But unfortunately now that option is gone (now it's too late) and this modernisation is supposed to keep them operational to 2025- 2030 when we want acquire some new fighters. That what i mentioned in article was old "part one upgrade"..

They are still better than our su-22 crap though...
