Overall spending has declined, but you have to watch four hot areas and monitor them for break out arms races.

1. Middle East, especially the Persian Gulf. NUCLEAR arms race.

2. Central and South Asia as China continues a slow arms buildup and fails to reign in her loud mouth politicians, business bandits, and incredibly stupid military leadership. Add Pakistani idiots and you have the recipe for certain disaster.

3. Pacific Rim, same as two but with North Korea playing the part of the idiots and China mismanaging itself again.
4. South America... yes South America, those incredibly dumb nations have not had a firm Uncle to sit on them so they are about to rumble among themselves again. Chile Argentina, Brazil, and Bolivia are currently being run by idiots. Venezuela is off in looney tune land by its lonesome and the Chinese are sniffing around ready to cause trouble.

As for Europe, well Russia is Russia and while 70 years is a long time, Human memory being what it is? It could go SOUTH in a hurry as it almost did in 1978 and again in 1988. Arms race not likely, but war fever is there too.

One correction, Keffler: the South America is ruled by psychopaths, communists and criminals - not necessarily in that order -, who dream in "reconstruct what was lost in Eastern Europe"... Some sort of USRSA - Union of the Socialist Republics of South America. It sounds like joke, but it's not, unfortunately. And Uncle Sam does nothing about this communist build-up in the Americas. We're doomed...

Bolivia?
I thought that place has been going from strength to strength? I thought they're bucking the trend, winning their war (internal) and growing their economy? what am i missing?

As to the rest, pretty much.
I actually don't think there'll be a nuclear arms race in the M.E.
Maybe I'm neivette, but, Israel already has its nukes, Iran, maybe a few years away, maybe closer, but the moneys already spent. Not racist, but i seriously don't think that any of the Arabs have it in them to build a cogent nuclear arms building industry, they simply dont have the native education system to support such a massive effort.
That leaves Turkey, who's military budget is huge. I think that should Iran come close to break out, we'll see Turkey enter a race, but it'll be a race of one, trying to play catch up.

And then there is Uraguay.    That was Argentina and Brazil.

The Marines have spent more time fighting South Americans than anyone else. The whole continent is RICH (richer than North America) and should be doing gangbusters, but they've been ruled by idiots for so ling that I despair of them ever coming up to snuff. What makes it worse is that MEXICO is exactly like them and you know what I written about THEM.
