I think the only AK variant that Russian manufacturer managed to export for money was AK-103. It has been sold to Venezuela and Pakistan.

Da Comrade, glorious patriotic rifle AK - 47 has been made in Amerika by several companies for years now. Inter ordnance (I.O.) and Century have been making complete rifles on mass production basis. Numerous small manufacturers have made them using the "Nodak Spud " made in USA receiver and imported demilled parts kits. Waffen Works comes to mind without resorting to google search. Venezuela has built an entire factory to produce the AK 103 (a modernized version of the AK 47 with plastic furniture, a side folding stock and a side mounted scope rail) I love my semi auto AK 103 imported from Bulgaria by Arsenal of Las Vegas. ( capitalist playground) A red dot on the rail brings old design into glorious modern age! My American friends, do not buy rifle in capitalist caliber .223! Only use rifle designed by hero of Soviet Union, comrade Kalashnikov Is manly rife! For new soviet men! And beautiful, cultured Russian brides!

1- Russia did not employ the first modern assault rifle

2- Kalashnikov did not "invent" the AK

3- The AK was cut almost exact from the cloth of WWII-Germany's StG-43/4 assault rifle which was air-dropped in great numbers to trapped and surrounded German units deep inside Russia during Operation Barbarossa

4- the Soviets, as they did with most of their best designs, stole this weapon design from captured German rifles and merely changed it's appearance slightly and adapted a "new" round.

5- Kalashnikov did have a hand in all later designs subsequent to the 47, but the original he did NOT "dream up  magnificent and complex original Soviet design while heroically recovering from combat wounds".......geesh.

I think the German STG is not exactly the same but a common ancestor to the G3 and AK. The AK has its own Soviet philosophy into it. Most guns derive from a previous design anyhow.

Much of the AK47's design is based off Federov's avtomat of WWI:
